"¤W°s®a ½ä³õ ¶W¯Åª÷³Òº¡¤Ñ¬P" ????

This is the problem. Why ROLEX for "¤W°s®a ½ä³õ"? That's a pity. Let me ask a few questions:

(1) Which brand reached the top of Himalayas first?
(2) Which brand reached 10,000M deep down in the ocean first?
(3) Which brand reached the Antarctic and North Pole first?
(4) Which brand can be hit by a truck and still pass COSC?
(5) Which brand created 24hour for two time zones?
(6) Which brand invented the date window?
(7) Which brand sponsored the most scientific researches and sport events?
(8) Which brand donated the most to charity?

Answers: ROLEX

Don't get me wrong. I love PP, Lange, etc. But, "¤W°s®a ½ä³õ ¶W¯Åª÷³Òº¡¤Ñ¬P" doesn't do any justice to ROLEX. ROLEX is the fundation for almost all modern watches. I admire ROLEX not only for watch making but also for running a successful business.

ROLEX is a victim of its own success. Many people want others to think they are rich and powerful. When they get rich, the first purchase is a ROLEX. Well, many people end up buying fake ROLEX. Pity!! I wonder if PP is following the same path in Taiwan.

Man, I give up. Taiwan ruined the images of many wonderful things: ROLEX, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, French liquor, French wine, etc. When James Bond wore ROLEX in many of the Bond movies, people thought that it was very classic. When a Taiwanese wears a ROLEX, people think that he is a "¤g°]¥D" or "¶Â¹D¤jô". It is a good thing that Taiwan doesn't have many places to race cars. Otherwise, Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini would become "bad names" too.

Etacaa¥S,

I don't think it's just Taiwan. A lot people don't care to find out what they are buying, using, or wearing. Reputation and acceptance plays a big part in our daily life, b/c we get a stonger sense of security out of it. The classic example is, when others think a product is good, then it can't go wrong; and when everyone thinks it's bad, one should stay away. It's purely psychological, b/c most people don't want to be the Guinea Pig. That's why celebrity endorsement is useful.

I personally feel that there's a stronger trait in Asian cultures than the Western cultures, b/c we care a lot more about what other people think. A lot of people just want to "fit in" or be recognized and don't want to be too different from the norm. In this sense, I think the US offers more room to be "different", b/c it's diversified to start out with (they have to worry about the population being too diversified). On the other hand, I personally feel that HK and Taiwan don't offer as much room. This is neither good nor bad. It's just part of the culture.

So what does this have to do with Rolex (or even PP)? Each brand has an image, and that's where the value lies in marketing sense. Rolex has been succesful in selling its products, and whether you know or not know the watches, this is what you get when you buy the watch. Most people happened to get the watch based on this image, or reputation, and not for the red wheels or its actual history. I doubt Rolex wants to make it «U, but it can't be avoided, and it's a mutual acceptance on both ends. Swaylone brought up a good point that the number of products in the market has a lot to do with it.

Out of all posts here, I echo wy02 and swaylone's thoughts.

To be honest, I used to think somewhat lowly of this brand prior to coming on board here. The major reason is, I'm a big fan of complications, and it doesn't really offer any, yet it's trying to brush a leading image among others. However, after arguing and studying the brand, I realize, this is exactly what they are trying to do. And in fact, they can execute their plan much better than other companies. So, even I still don't prefer the technical part, I have much more respect to it as a business entity. They have a plan, and they got it done.

Anyway, I think this is an interesting thread, and I just want to chip in my thoughts.
