Rolex 1978> A Lange & Soehne is comparable, if not better, than PP. GO is right behind it. I think there are a few reasons why GO is not as well known as AP, VC and Breguet.
1) History. 2) Lack of products, especially complicated watches. 3) Name recognition. Honestly, I hope GO won't start making money grabbing entry level stuff. As for the reasons for the price increases, here's my few thoughts: 1) The demand is there. More and more people are looking for mechanical pieces. Even the economy is not as good as the 90's, a lof of people are still wealthy. I bet some of them are not investing as much and willing to buy a few nice watches instead. 2) It's a luxury and it's hard to put a price tag on it. 852 doesn't like watch companies making cheap entry models and cheat off buyers. However, this is the winning formular for many companies and it may be critical for some to survive. If company "A" makes great repeater watches, it's only logical from a business point of view to make some entry level watches and make a whole Royal deal about it. Also, I think young people are much more willing to spend money on luxury items which "helps" a lot. 3) Watch companies are just like any other industry, they have to be responsible to their shareholders. So obviously, they don't care how the collectors or WIS think. We are only contributing a fraction to their revenue, so why should they be considerate to us? If most buyers are half as knowledgeable than the watchbusers, then most companies will be gone within 5 years. This is one of the reasons I started looking at smaller companies and independent watchmakers. At least they can be as creative as they want to be. 4) If you are working for a reputable watch company as a marketing director, and you see others are raising the price, do you want to be view as the "best value provider"? Again, we are talking about a luxury item, and best value doesn't not go along with that. Anyone who has studied the game theory would follow suit. The question is, when will this stop? |
