The white (SBGH001) and the green (SBGH003) dials of the GS Hi-beat 36000 have already been shown by Shen678888 大大 and Kenny1234 大大 respectively. I just received my GS Hi-beat 36000 black dial (SBGH005) on 24 Dec 2009. Just on time for X'mas!
Introduction
A perfect watch to me will be
1. mechanical (better to be automatic)
2. SS with bracelet- good for work and daily use, shirts or jeans
3. black dial
4. ~40mm
5. hour, minute, second (center) and date (no magnify glass)
6. reasonable accuracy (within COSC standard)
GS is not eye-catching but has good craftmanship and accuracy. All my previous GSs had never let me down. My 5 years old SBGM001 still runs +1s/day. There are a few GS that are very close to the perfect watch:
SBGR023 (left)- but too small, only 37.5mm
SBGA003 (right)- but not pure mechanical
SBGM001(middle)- good size of 39.2mm, best design (in all GS) but a bit complicated
Out of Box
Finally GS has released the Hi-beat 36000. First with the white and green (limited) dials and later the black dial. The SBGH005 has just been released in Japan in late Nov 2009. It seems to be perfect. I also want to have first hand experience with this 36000 beats movement. Theoretically it should be more accurate than 28800 beats movements. Think over it for a month as the Yen is high. Finally sold 4 Seikos and added a bit of cash to get it from Japan.
The size is ~40mm/13mm and it is heavy:
Bracelet and Case
Adjusting the bracelet is a headache. The screws are of 1.5mm size. I needed a loop and a very small screw driver. It took nearly one hour and luckily, I did not drop a single screw. There are 2 half links. Two half links are bigger than one full size link. The bracelet can be adjusted to fit wrist of any size. A lot of Swiss watches still do not supply half links. The clasp is signed GS and is easy to close and open. Overall the bracelet is comfortable. As comparing to the modern SS Rolex oyster bracelet like the GMT II/Daytona, the Rolex bracelet is more solid. The craftmanship of the case is of the usual high GS standard.
Dial
The dial is grossly black. The hour and minute hands have 5-sides cut and they are all polished. It has been said that these make the time easily to be read from any direction even with a dim light. The dial is simple and has SEIKO on top and GS/Grand Seiko/AUTOMATIC/HI-BEAT 36000 at the bottom. The sapphire crystal is anti-refective. The crown is large (bigger than SBGM001) and signed with GS. The crown is screwed down type and gives a water resistance of 100M.
Back
It has a display back. The back sapphire is engraved with the GS lion using laser. It is very difficult to capture the lion using my poor DC.
Movement and Accuracy
I know little about the detail of this movement (9S85A). It beats at 10/sec giving 36000 per hour. This makes the second hand running smooth (but not as smooth as Springdrive). The hand-winding is silky smooth. The watch is rated over 17 days in 6 positions at 3 different temperatures. It is certified to run between -3 and +5 seconds a day, same as other GS automatic movements. Out of the box, I adjusted the time with my Casio Band 6 Riseman and there is +2 sec after 4 days of normal wear.
Conclusion
I have sold both the SBGA003 and SBGR023. The SBGA003 is certainly a good watch with an appropriate sze (in today's standard) if you do not mind its hybrid movement. This SBGH005 is just perfect for me with the power reserve indicator removed and the movement replaced by a 36000 beats pure mechanical movement. The SBGR023 is simple and clean but the size is a bit small. People like smaller watch will find the SBGR023 a perfect daily watch and it is also much cheaper than the SBGH005.
