Why is it bad?
It has nothing to do with "freedom", it's about profit and market control , and it's a fair practice at that. If it really is bad, why are people from Taiwan coming to U.S. to buy Rolex? I think this "tight" control is actually good for a large market like the U.S.: 1) It helped created a Rolex controled stable priced , which we all see now is cheaper than price in a flooding grey market like in Taiwan. 2) It ensured better availablity of product. The wait list for buying Daytona and MilGauss is much easier than in Taiwan or in U.K. and we can buy it at list price when our wait is done. These "rules" are not good for grey marketer who want to make profit off Rolex. Now if you are Rolex what would you do? Further more, Rolex is not the only brand with these anti-grey market practice... most name brands does, like BMW, Mercedes, etc. These Anti-Grey Market practice reduced goods from flooding the U.S. market... If having open import rules means a market like in Taiwan, then I rather Rolex keep the tight import control, so I can buy my Daytona in U.S. at list price. All in all, with all the money we saved and more watches obtainable... these "tight" controls by Rolex helped U.S. customer enjoyed a more stable price market for individual consumer. I am a consumer, it is a small inconvenience to be able to bring 1 Rolex into U.S. at once, becuase I can usually get the Rolex I want inside U.S. for equal or better price than in H.K. or Europe. |
