This is my 2nd Springdive. I am happy with my 1st one- the SBGA003. 
I have searched this 1st Springdrive (SBWA001/SMK001J) for more than 1 year. This is sure a collectable item because of it's a milestone in horology and its limited number. The quality of the case and bracelet is not comparable to the GS and it just feels like a US200 Seiko. The second hand runs smoothly without any jerky motion like mechanical watches. The power-reserve is only 48 hours comparing to the 72 hours in the the recent automatic Springdrive. After 48 hours, it is +0sec. This is a history of the Springdrive: The first generation Springdrive model should be launched in 1999 - branded under Seiko and was manual with power-reserve only 48h . Model no. SBWA001 (in Japan)/SMK001J (in HK). It is said to be a limited edition of 500 pieces. The gold version is SBWA002, 300 pieces. 
(pic from J Gauch's data base) This caliber (7R68) or its modification was continued to be used by Credor. The 2nd generation was launched in 2004 under Grand Seiko (caliber 9R65/9R66), automatic with power-reserve 72 hours. They are only sold in Japan and Taiwan. 9R65

(pic from Seiko Japan) The models launched in 2005 under the brand Seiko are sold outside Japan (caliber 5R65/5R64): 5R65: Diameter 30mm, thickness 5.1mm, 30 jewels, 276 components and power reserve 72 hours

(pic from TZ) They are also automatic models. I do try to find out the difference between the 9R65 and the 5R65 but failed. Their specifications look similar: 72h power-reserve and accuracy 15s/month. I think they are the same except that the 9R65 is having better decoration. But I may be wrong! The models launched in 2006 are having GMT (5R66) and Moonphase (5R67, limited edition of 200). 5R66: Diameter 30mm, thickness 5.8mm, 30 jewels, 296 components and power reserve 72 hours

It is not a quartz nor an automatic. It is a hybrid. Fpr how Springdrive work, please read this detail article in Timezone: http://www.timezone.com/library/rdnotebook/200509073623 Since my Springdrives have not been repaired or serviced, I don't know how much it will need. Cheers. |
